Networking Groups: Are you working them?

Yesterday, I had a great informational session to start a networking group in an area near to me.  The group is being "chartered" by BNI (Business Networking International).  This is a company that helps set up and maintain networking groups with some rigid standards regarding attendance and education.

My question is, with the proliferation of these groups, which ones are you using and what's working for you personally AND your bottomline?

For instance, I'm planning on getting involved in our local Kiwanis group, for the personal side but the BNI meeting is almost purely for referrals.

I prefer to do the "old school" networking groups like Rotary & Exchange...it is a Win Win for everyone! I meet great people in our community and I also give back to the community....something for both my business growth and my personal enrichment.

I find that putting together my own is better. Do it around a common interest, like golf, investing, etc. Try to get you group large, but not with strict standards and people will work with you for a long time. Networking groups generate leads for you, but Sphere of Influence Marketing sends you friends and customers for life.

BNI is the best group I ever belonged to. I have been in many groups. I was a member of BNI for many years and it did wonders for my business. Hope it goes well for you too.

I joined the local Rotary Club. It is a nice group, and working on some nice projects.  I have already had a member try to refer a client to me.  Not sure if it is going to workout or not but he is trying to make it work so that is what counts.

I haven't joined any local clubs or groups but I just network on the internet- seems to work ok for me. I may branch out.....

Joshua,

Thanks for the post. There can never be too many networking opportunities. I am on the board of four organizations, which has helped me get exposure for my business.

Rotary did wonders for me....networking can give back to the community as well as generate referrals

I've heard of Rotary groups but I'm not sure how to get into one.  I've been trying to go to the Kiwanis group locally as well, but it's at a time that's difficult to make it.

Thanks for all the responses.

Joshua, this i a great post because it highlights the fact that there is still no replacement for face to face social networking.

There has been a deluge of online social networking websites over the past couple of years, and whilst I have chosen to join several of them (Active Rain being just one) I feel there is no better way to build relationships, expand your professional/social network and meet potential clients than actually getting out there and meeting people.

Let us know how you get on.
